Loggia of Pope Leo X

by:   Raphael      patron:   Leo X      category: Fresco    location: Papal Palace

note:  Includes a suite of frescoed vaults that are alternately known as "Raphael's Bible" and features work by Romano; Penni; Vincidor; Polidoro; da Udine; Perino; and Pellegrino. It was in the loggia that Polidoro purportedly joined the team as a plasterer, however Henry and Joannides propose that he assisted Penni in some of the chamber's modelli (Henry and Joannides, 2013, p. 35). These frescoes were spread across 13 bays (including a total of 52 biblical scenes, mostly from the Old Testament in the vaults and bronzaille Biblical scenes in the lower levels). Documented on 11 June 1519 is a payment made for work by several (unnamed) workshop members in the Loggia: "A li garzoni hanno dipinita la logia, ducati venticinque" (Golzio, 1936, p. 99; Ferrara 1992, p. 4).
