Lante Cancelleria Roundel 2

Angelo Poliziano (1521-1522)

by:   Penni   |    Polidoro      patron:   Turini      category: Fresco    location: Villa Lante al Gianicolo

note:  Included in the four portrait roundels of this room is one likeness strikingly similar to Raphael's presumed self-portrait in Self-Portrait with a Friend; Lilius (1981) has interpreted the remaining three as representing Angelo Poliziano; Dante, and Petrarch. These roundels are set within an all'antica white ground filled with grotesque motifs and are flanked with rectangular sfondo nero panels reminiscent of those seen in various preceding workshop projects, from the Stufetta of Cardinal Bibbiena to Palazzo Baldassini.
