Lante Sala 2 Roundel 3

Gravida (1521-1522)

by:   Penni   |    Polidoro      patron:   Turini      category: Fresco    location: Villa Lante al Gianicolo

note:  Included in the four portrait roundels of this room are female likeness most likely derived from earlier paintings associated with Raphael and his workshop. In addition to the quotation of La Donna Velata and La Fornarina, Lilius (1981) identified La Donna Gravida (1505-1506) and the muse Melpomene as depicted in the Vatican Parnassus. Lilius' first interpretation, however is probably better replaced with a connection to Giulio Romano's Portrait of a Young Woman. These roundels are set within an all'antica white ground filled with grotesque motifs and are flanked with rectangular sfondo nero panels reminiscent of those seen in various preceding workshop projects, from the Stufetta of Cardinal Bibbiena to Palazzo Baldassini.
