note:  Aligns with a potential trend between 1515-1518 for scenes of Saint John in the Wilderness, however, as Henry/Joannides (2013) note the smaller scale of this painting implies its role for private religious reflection (see no. 59). It is unusual to see this moment as an independent narrative.
