Leo X Triumph Crest study 2

Triumphal Crest for Leo X (1517-1523)

by:   Peruzzi      patron:   Orsini      category: Drawing

note:  This drawing is a keen replica of the earlier version, however, its modifications encourage a later date. Specifically, the name of Leo has been omitted, presumably - as noted by Frommel (1967/68) to reflect the installation of the new pope, Clement VII. Sauli, the proposed patron of the first version of this image, was by 1517 imprisoned for his role in a plot to assassinate the pope; this later version thus is purportedly a related to a commission by Franciotto Orsini. https://www.britishmuseum.org/collection/object/P_1946-0413-211
