Polidoro Entombment study

Christ Carried to the Tomb (1522-1523)

by:   Polidoro      category: Drawing    location: Santa Maria della Pietà in Camposanto Teutonico

note:  Verso shows evidence of a partial drawing of a hexagonal coffered ceiling; Clayton (1999) parallels style with Polidoro's "probable contributions to the frescoes in Santa Maria della Pietà in Camposanto Teutonico, and naturally his facade paintings. The same rational organization can be seen in two related drawings by Polidoro of the Entombment, in the louvre and the Fogg Art Museum. Perion del Vaga's red-chalk drawing in the British Museum for a Deposition of ca. 1522 is very close in style and figure types to the present sheet and reflects the continuing contact between Perino an Polidoro" (200).
